Amos was a prophet from the southern kingdom—Hosea from the north—both from the 8th century, B.C. They both preached judgment and grace. But the content is quite distinct. The Book of Hosea is explicit with adultery, addiction to prostitution, and consequences. It is vitally relative to society today. But it is not a book for children to study. Youth and adults will confront the application for their lives of God’s grace and God’s judgment in a way that is unique to the Book of Hosea. They will be forced to consider if being “good” is enough to face God’s judgment—and if self-sufficiency is enough to acquire God’s grace.
